University of Montana and Montana State fans will square off in November to see who can donate the most lifesaving blood during the annual Cat-Griz Blood Battle.
The rivalry runs deep, and this November it’s more than gridiron bragging rights on the line. Montana Red Cross invites fans of the Montana State Bobcats and University of Montana Grizzlies to roll up their sleeves for the annual Blood Battle — a lifesaving competition to see which fan base can donate the most blood.
Now in its third decade, the Blood Battle has become a fall tradition. Over the years, thousands of Montanans have taken part, helping ensure hospitals across the state have the blood products they need.
Last year, Bobcat Nation came out on top, donating 115 units of blood to the Grizzlies’ 95, marking Montana State’s third victory in the past four years. This fall, both sides are ready for a rematch — and every donation helps patients across Montana, including accident victims, cancer patients and mothers experiencing complications during childbirth.
“This rivalry isn’t just about who wins on the football field — it’s about who shows up for their neighbors,” said Hannah Zuraff, Montana Red Cross executive director. “We’re asking every fan to take an hour, roll up a sleeve and be a hero for Montana patients.”
The Blood Battle comes at a crucial time of year, when donations often decline due to holiday schedules and winter weather. The Red Cross supplies blood products to more than 30 hospitals and medical centers statewide, making every drop count.
“The need for blood doesn’t take a holiday,” Zuraff said. “This is often when our hospitals feel the pinch the most, and when Montana’s generosity truly makes a difference.”
