The American Red Cross Greater New York Region operates the largest and busiest disaster-response program in the nation, providing assistance, compassion and comfort to more than 12,000 New Yorkers affected by approximately 2,300 emergencies—home fires, building collapses, floods and more—each year.
Greater New York disaster responders—volunteers and employees—arrive at emergencies within minutes, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, an average of 7 times a day, and provide food, shelter, health services and mental-health support to the thousands of adults and children affected by these emergencies.
The Greater New York Red Cross augments the efforts of city, state and county agencies to ensure that the basic needs of those within its jurisdiction are being met during times of disaster. Additionally, it provides support to first responders, and sends Red Cross workers to disaster responses across the country as needed.
