SALT LAKE CITY (June 1, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is honoring the 18th anniversary of National CPR and AED Awareness Week, observed from June 1-7, by encouraging Utahns to learn lifesaving skills such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Hands-Only CPR (chest compressions without rescue breaths). Combined with the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), these techniques can make a critical difference during cardiac emergencies.
Each year, more than 350,000 people in the U.S. experience cardiac arrest outside of medical facilities, with nearly 90% of these incidents being fatal. However, performing immediate CPR can double the chances of survival. The Red Cross is dedicated to equipping bystanders with the knowledge and confidence to act quickly during these emergencies.
Last year, over 4.5 million people turned to the Red Cross for training in First Aid, CPR and AED use, helping to create safer communities across the country. Time is of the essence during cardiac events, as research shows that for every minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival decreases by 7-10%. CPR training empowers ordinary people to step in and assist until professional help arrives.
“Sudden cardiac arrest can occur to anyone, anywhere, at any time and often without warning,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “When performed correctly, CPR ensures blood continues flowing to vital organs until medical responders arrive.”
With more than three out of four cardiac arrests taking place at home or at work, every second counts when the heart stops. “CPR training can be the difference between life and death during a cardiac emergency,” added Donner. “The more people trained to act confidently and swiftly, the greater the chances of survival.”

About National CPR & AED Awareness Week
On December 13, 2007, the U.S. Congress, with support from the American Red Cross and partner organizations, designated June 1-7 as National CPR and AED Awareness Week. The goal is to raise awareness about how lives can be saved if more people are trained in CPR and AED use while emphasizing the vital role bystanders play in responding to cardiac emergencies.
