SALT LAKE CITY (May 21, 2025) — This May, in recognition of Wildfire Awareness Month, the American Red Cross is offering free wildfire prevention information and resources to help local residents stay safe.
With wildfire season approaching, it’s crucial for Utahns to be prepared. Recognizing the growing risks, Governor Spencer Cox recently signed an executive order aimed at bolstering the state’s wildfire preparedness. The order emphasizes addressing Utah’s wildfire vulnerabilities and highlights the increasing risk of post-fire flooding and debris flows.
These efforts build on the success of the Fire Sense Campaign, which reduced human-caused wildfires statewide by 75% in just four years. The Red Cross of Utah is committed to supporting these initiatives with vital education and resources to keep communities safe.
“Our mission at the Red Cross is to lessen human suffering wherever we can,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “This includes not only responding to large-scale disasters but also empowering people with the knowledge to prepare for and prevent them.”
Resources for Families and Homeowners
The Red Cross provides wildfire safety materials for all ages, including the popular “Prepare with Pedro” series designed for kids. Through engaging stories with Pedro the penguin, children learn essential safety tips like what an evacuation is, how to recognize fire warnings, and calming techniques for stressful situations.
Homeowners are encouraged to inspect their properties for wildfire risks, such as overgrown grass, dead trees and dry plant material. Simple proactive measures can make homes safer and reduce the risk of wildfire damage.
Here are some additional wildfire safety tips recommended by the Red Cross and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA):
About National Wildfire Awareness Month
National Wildfire Awareness Month is observed each May and coincides with the start of the warmer and drier weather, which increases the risk of wildfires, especially in high-risk areas. It focuses on education and prevention efforts to address wildfire risks. Wildfires remain a significant concern across the United States, with over 64,000 reported fires burning nearly 9 million acres in 2024 alone.
About the American Red Cross
