SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 3, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is making it easier than ever for Utahns to take control of their health this August. Throughout the month, all blood donors at Red Cross blood drives and donation centers across the state will receive a free A1C test, a vital measure of blood sugar levels that can provide early insights into diabetes risk.
“At the American Red Cross, we believe that giving blood is about more than helping to save lives—it’s also an opportunity to take care of your own health,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “We’re thrilled to offer complimentary A1C testing to our generous donors this August. It’s a simple yet impactful way for Utahns to gain valuable health insights while making a meaningful difference in their community.”
The Importance of A1C Testing
Diabetes affects 1 in 10 Americans, yet nearly 25% of those with the condition remain undiagnosed, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Additionally, one-third of Americans face barriers to regular primary care. The Red Cross’s free A1C screenings aim to address these challenges by equipping donors with critical health information.
“Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90% of diabetes cases in the U.S., develops gradually and often goes unnoticed until significant damage has occurred,” said Dr. Courtney Lawrence, Medical Director for the Red Cross. “By identifying elevated A1C levels early, donors can take proactive steps to prevent or manage chronic illnesses, improve their quality of life and even save lives. Blood donation can now be part of that health journey.”
How It Works
The free A1C testing will be available for all successful blood, platelet and plasma donations made between Aug. 1-31, 2025 (one test result per donor in a 12-month period). Donors will receive their A1C results within one to two weeks through the Red Cross Blood Donor App or the online donor portal. If results indicate an elevated A1C level, donors are encouraged to consult their healthcare provider.
This A1C screening is part of the Red Cross’s broader commitment to community health, which includes disaster relief efforts, basic disaster health care and mental health support. In addition to A1C testing, donors will continue to receive other health insights, such as pulse, blood pressure, body temperature and hemoglobin levels.
How to Donate
Donating blood is easy and convenient. Donors can schedule an appointment through the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting redcross.org/GiveBlood or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
As a thank-you, all donors who give blood between Aug. 1-28, 2025, will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice. Plus, free A1C testing will be performed on all successful donations made Aug. 1-31, 2025. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org/Test.
