Three More Donors at Every Red Cross Blood Drive Could Help Turn Around National Blood Crisis

Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low nationwide, leaving the blood supply under severe pressure heading into the final weeks of summer.

SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 10, 2026) — Just three more donors at every blood drive could help stabilize the nation’s blood supply as the American Red Cross recovers from a steep summer decline that led to only the second national blood crisis in its history.

Despite thousands of people responding to calls for blood donations in recent weeks, the blood supply has not fully recovered. The Red Cross declared an emergency blood shortage on July 13 after its national supply fell nearly 25% in one month. Two weeks later, it declared a national blood crisis as donations dropped to a four-year summer low.

“Three people may not sound like a lot, but adding three donors to every blood drive across the country could make a real difference in rebuilding the blood supply,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “Utahns have responded throughout this crisis, and we need that support to continue through the final weeks of summer.”

Blood and platelets are needed every day for accident and burn victims, patients undergoing heart surgery and organ transplants, and people receiving treatment for cancer and sickle cell disease. Because blood cannot be manufactured and can be stored only for a limited time, the supply depends on regular donors.

Donors can schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting redcross.org/GiveBlood or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

Those who come to give Aug. 1-31, 2026, will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email. Platelet donors who give Aug. 1-15 will also receive a Red Cross clear mini backpack, while supplies last. Additional details are available at RedCrossblood.org/GivePlatelets and RedCrossBlood.org/August.
