SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 5, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is teaming up with the Salt Lake City Fire Department to raise awareness about the fire risks associated with Christmas trees and holiday decorations. On Monday, Dec. 8, at 10 a.m., firefighters have a live fire hazard demonstration to show how quickly a dry Christmas tree can ignite and spread flames. Red Cross and fire officials will also share practical fire safety tips to help families stay safe while celebrating the holidays.
Christmas trees, holiday decorations and festive meals – hallmarks of the holiday season – can pose significant fire risks. In fact, Christmas Day and Christmas Eve rank as the second- and third-leading days of the year for home cooking fires nationwide.
The Hidden Dangers of Holiday Decorations
While Christmas tree fires are uncommon, they can be devastating when they occur. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), nearly one-third of Christmas tree-related fires happen in January when trees are dry and highly flammable. Each year, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 155 Christmas tree fires, resulting in five deaths and significant property damage.
“Christmas tree fires are completely preventable, yet they still contribute to numerous home fires during the holiday season,” said Capt. Chad Jepperson of the Salt Lake City Fire Department. “This demonstration will show just how quickly a dry tree can ignite, emphasizing the importance of proper tree care and fire safety.”
10 Tips to Keep Your Home Safe
The Red Cross of Utah and Salt Lake City Fire Department recommend these simple steps to reduce holiday fire risks:
A Collaborative Effort to Save Lives
“We know Salt Lake City firefighters are ready to respond to fires this holiday season, and the Red Cross is prepared to assist,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “However, our shared goal is prevention. By teaching families how to properly care for their Christmas trees and follow fire safety tips, we can help avoid these tragedies entirely.”
Home fires are the most common disaster in the U.S., and the Red Cross of Utah is committed to helping families prepare and recover. This year, Red Cross of Utah volunteers have responded to over 140 home fires, providing critical support to nearly 700 people. In 2024, our volunteers responded to nearly 160 home fires, assisting more than 725 residents.
To further reduce the risk of home fires, the Red Cross of Utah offers free smoke alarm installations and fire safety education through its Sound the Alarm program. Residents can schedule an appointment at
