LAYTON, Utah (July 22, 2023) — Culver's of Layton is teaming up with the American Red Cross of Utah in a delicious campaign to encourage blood donation and address the urgent issue of dwindling blood supply throughout the summer months. Donors will be rewarded with vouchers for a pint of custard and a value basket, which includes a burger, fries, and a drink, during the upcoming blood drive on Tuesday, July 25, at Culver's of Layton.
“We are grateful Culver’s of Layton is once again supporting the Red Cross and helping us say ‘thank you’ to our donors who have such a big impact on the lives of patients in our region,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Northern Utah & Southwest Wyoming Chapter. “Nationwide there has been a short fall of about 50,000 donations over the past two months. Summer is often a challenging time for blood donations, and we encourage everyone to join us in making a positive impact.”
The blood drive will be held at the Culver's of Layton located at 340 E. Gentile St. from Noon to 5 p.m. on July 25. All donors will receive vouchers for a pint of custard and a value basket redeemable only at Culver's of Layton while supplies last. Appointments for this drive are strongly encouraged.
“We are proud to partner with the Red Cross of Utah again and help replenish the blood supply during this recent summer donation slump,” said Eric Reese, Culver’s of Layton manager. “Donating blood is a seemingly simple yet profoundly impactful act that significantly improves and helps to save countless lives. Providing the vouchers for custard and burgers is a small gesture of appreciation and aims to inspiring a greater number of people to join us in supporting Red Cross blood drives.”
Summer slump in blood donations
During the summer, blood donations often decrease due to vacations, travel and other seasonal activities. This decline in donations can strain the blood supply and pose potential challenges for patients in need.
The Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood, needing to collect about 12,500 blood and 3,000 platelet donations daily to meet demand. “This summer’s decline in donations can strain the supply, meaning hospitals might not have what they need to save lives,” Smauldon said. "And any one of us – family member, neighbor, close friend – could need a life-saving blood transfusion due to an accident or illness."
Give now. Help save lives

Additionally, all those who come to donate blood between July 17 and July 31 will receive an officially licensed Shark Week T-shirt, exclusively available at Red Cross blood drives and donation centers (while supplies last).
