ST. GEORGE, Utah (Oct. 26, 2026) — Dixie Power and the American Red Cross of Utah kick off Southern Utah’s largest blood drive today, Monday, Oct. 26, at Black Hill Event Venue in St. George, aiming to surpass last year’s record 557 blood donations during the three-day event.
Since launching the drive in 2019, Dixie Power has collected 2,054 units of blood, with annual collections increasing every year. What began as a single-day event collecting 62 units has grown into Southern Utah’s largest annual blood drive.
“Giving back to the communities we serve has always been a priority for Dixie Power, and we’re proud of what this blood drive has become,” said Steve Young, Dixie Power Communications Manager. “Our employees and neighbors have helped make it bigger and more successful every year, and we’d love to see Southern Utah come together once again to break last year’s record.”
Seven Years of Growing Blood Donations
Dixie Power hosted its first Red Cross blood drive in 2019, collecting 62 units during a one-day event. As participation increased, the cooperative expanded the drive to two days in 2021 and three days in 2022.
Annual blood collections have continued to rise:
“Dixie Power has built one of the most successful blood drives in Utah, and that doesn’t happen without years of commitment and community support,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “We’re grateful for their partnership and for the hundreds of people who take the time to donate blood each year at the Dixie Power blood drive.”
Blood Donations Needed Ahead of the Holidays
The annual drive comes as the Red Cross works to maintain the blood supply ahead of Thanksgiving and the December holidays, when travel, school breaks and holiday activities can make it more difficult for people to donate.
While donations of all blood types are needed, O positive and O negative are especially important. O positive is the most frequently transfused blood type, while O negative is the universal blood donor type and can be given to patients of any blood type during emergencies.
The Red Cross supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood, including donations used by nearly 45 hospitals in Utah. Nationwide, the Red Cross must collect about 13,000 blood donations every day to help meet hospital demand.
