SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 10, 2023) — Since its release 20 years ago, the holiday movie classic “Elf” has inspired a Broadway musical, an animated special and a video game. Now, it's the inspiration behind the ultra-exclusive “Elf” + Red Cross socks, featuring Buddy the Elf.
These unique socks are not for sale. However, starting today, Utahns can get these sought-after holiday socks for free as a token of appreciation for donating blood. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the film “Elf,” and create holiday cheer, all who come to give Nov. 10-30 will receive an exclusive pair of “Elf” + Red Cross socks, while supplies last. For more details, visit RedCrossBlood.org/Elf.
“The satisfaction and sense of purpose that comes from donating blood is incomparable. Our unique “Elf” socks giveaway celebrates this feeling and encourages the spirit of giving,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Utah, Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “It's not just about the socks; it's about the difference each one of us can make in someone's life.”
Just like Buddy the Elf said, “There's room for everyone on the Nice List.”
Holiday season blood donations
During the holiday season, several factors can disrupt the Red Cross’s ability to collect enough blood to meet the needs of patients across the country including holiday travel, seasonal illnesses like the flu and severe winter weather. “With all the excitement surrounding the holidays, blood donation may get overlooked due all the obligations,” Lafranca said. “This time of year, many regular donors will take a break from their normal routine and may not have a chance to donate, but patients’ need for blood remains constant.”
Donors can schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting redcrossblood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). The Red Cross plays a crucial role in maintaining the country's blood supply, providing about 40% of all collected blood. To meet patient needs at over 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide, the Red Cross must collect 12,500 blood and 3,000 platelet donations daily.
While all blood types are needed, there is a critical demand for type O and platelet donors. Type O positive is the most transfused blood type, while type O negative is the universal donor, often used in emergencies when the patient's blood type cannot be quickly determined. Platelets, a unique blood product, are essential for patients, such as those battling cancer.
About “Elf”
