SALT LAKE CITY (March 14, 2026) — Families across Utah will be better prepared for home fires and other disasters thanks to a donation of 300 carbon monoxide and natural gas combination detectors and a $60,000 grant from Enbridge Gas Utah to the American Red Cross of Utah. The support will strengthen home fire safety and preparedness programs and help the Red Cross respond quickly to emergencies.
“Enbridge Gas Utah is proud to continue our long-standing partnership with the American Red Cross,” said Jeff Hansen, Director of Pipeline Integrity for Enbridge Gas Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho, and a former board member of the American Red Cross in Utah. “Sound the Alarm highlights the importance of building safe, resilient communities—something we value deeply. Safety is our top priority, and we look forward to engaging with our neighbors to promote home safety.”
The carbon monoxide and natural gas combination detectors will be used during the Sound the Alarm free smoke alarm installation event in West Valley City on March 28 as part of Red Cross Month. Enbridge Gas Utah employees will also volunteer at the event. Additional detectors will be distributed throughout the year through the Red Cross free smoke alarm program.
“A home fire can shatter a family’s sense of security in a matter of minutes, leaving them uncertain about where they’ll sleep and how to move forward,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “This grant from Enbridge Gas Utah puts real protection into more Utah homes with carbon monoxide and natural gas detectors and helps keep our volunteers equipped to support families.”
Red Cross Home Fire Responses
So far this year, Red Cross of Utah volunteers have responded to nearly 30 home fires and helped more than 100 people. Home fires are the most common disaster in the U.S., and Utah volunteers assist families with immediate needs and recovery resources after a fire.
Over the past six years, home fires in Utah have created a greater need for community support and fire preparedness. Since 2020, Red Cross teams in Utah have responded to 1,008 home fires and supported 4,649 people. An average of 168 home fire responses and 774 people helped each year.
Empowering Communities with Fire Prevention
To help prevent home fire tragedies, residents can schedule free smoke alarm installations through the Sound the Alarm campaign. During home visits, Red Cross volunteers and community partners install smoke alarms, share fire safety information, and help families create evacuation plans for all household members, including pets.
