FOUNTAIN GREEN, Utah (Aug. 20, 2024) — The Red Cross of Utah will be in Fountain Green today to conduct critical damage assessments on nearly 75 homes affected by Sunday’s severe flooding, aiming to identify residents’ needs and determine how to best help those most in need.
“Our priority is to ensure that every affected resident receives the help they need,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “Conducting these damage assessments is a crucial step in our response efforts. It allows us to understand the scope of the impact and tailor our assistance to meet the specific needs of each household.”
City officials report that nearly half of the 1,200 residents in Fountain Green may have been affected by the flash flooding, with water levels ranging from a few inches in basements to several feet in other homes. The Red Cross uses FEMA criteria to assess the level of damage and determine eligibility for financial assistance. Residents who haven’t yet received a visit for damage assessment can call 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767) to request one.
“Disaster assessment is crucial for guiding people on their next steps by informing them about available resources, providing relief and hope to those affected during such challenging times,” Donner said. “Although the work can be emotionally taxing due to the devastation witnessed, it provides significant relief and hope to those impacted, helping them understand the available support and resources.”
Safe flood cleanup
The health and safety of residents must be prioritized during flood cleanup efforts. If the flooding resulted from a natural disaster, it is essential to ensure that homes are structurally sound before beginning cleanup. Wearing protective gear is also recommended when cleaning up flooded areas.
The Red Cross will distribute free cleanup kits to help Fountain Green residents safely manage post-flood conditions. These kits include bleach, a bucket, scrubbers and sponges, mops, brooms, long-handle squeegees, garbage bags and gloves. “The Red Cross is working closely with city officials and other partners to support our neighbors impacted by the recent flooding,” Donner said. “We encourage everyone to be cautious when cleaning up, wear protective clothing, and dispose of any food, water or medicine that came into contact with floodwater. When in doubt, throw it out.”
