SALT LAKE CITY (June 30, 2026) — With more than 61 million people expected to travel by car this Fourth of July holiday, the American Red Cross of Utah is urging motorists to stay alert on the road and update their vehicles’ emergency kits to handle extreme heat. High temperatures can quickly turn traffic delays and vehicle problems into dangerous situations.
According to the National Safety Council (NSC), an estimated 410 traffic-related fatalities and more than 46,000 injuries are projected nationwide during the holiday weekend, making it especially important for drivers to prepare before heading out.
“Before heading out for the holiday, check your vehicle, plan your route and make sure your emergency kit is ready for extreme heat,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter. “Simple steps such as carrying extra water, buckling up, avoiding distractions and never driving impaired can help keep families safer on the road.”
Update Car Emergency Kits for Extreme Heat
The Red Cross urges drivers to carry an emergency kit year-round, but extreme heat calls for a few additional supplies. For summer travel, the Red Cross of Utah recommends adding extra bottled water, electrolyte tablets or sports drinks, sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, a reflective windshield sunshade, umbrellas or other shade sources and cooling towels or misting fans.
The Red Cross recommends including the following items in a car emergency kit year-round:
The Red Cross encourages drivers to review their kits regularly and tailor supplies to their needs, especially when traveling with children, older adults or pets. For a full list of recommended supplies, visit redcross.org/kit.
Traffic Risks and Record Fourth of July Travel
This Fourth of July holiday weekend is expected to set a travel record, with more than 72 million Americans traveling by July 5, including more than 61 million by car. NSC analysis projects 410 deaths from preventable traffic crashes and more than 46,000 injuries nationwide during the holiday weekend.
“As we prepare to commemorate our nation’s 250th anniversary, we have an opportunity to make this Independence Day one of the safest yet,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO. “Every driver has the power to help prevent a tragedy by making simple, safe choices behind the wheel. Driving sober, slowing down and staying focused on the road can help ensure more people spend this holiday weekend with family and friends rather than getting hurt or losing their lives.”
