EVANSTON, Wyo. (Feb. 19, 2026) — The American Red Cross of Utah provided assistance Wednesday to people stranded after two large crashes closed Interstate 80 near Evanston, Wyo., bringing travel to a standstill in severe winter conditions.
The Red Cross supported an evacuation shelter opened by Uinta County Emergency Management with blankets, comfort kits and dinner for about 50 people, including stranded travelers, shelter workers and first responders. No overnight sheltering was required after a community partner provided lodging. The Best Western Dunmar Inn provided free rooms for families left stranded by the accident. Thursday, Red Cross of Utah volunteers will continue with follow-up client care and on-scene support.
“We’re here to help people affected by this tragic crash,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah and Southwest Wyoming Chapter. “Volunteers and partners moved quickly to connect people with a safe place to stay, warm meals and essential resources during a difficult time.”
Multi-Vehicle Crashes Close I-80
Two multi-vehicle crashes closed a 21-mile stretch of Interstate 80 between Evanston and Lyman in both directions on Wednesday afternoon, leaving motorists stranded in a winter storm. The road remained closed Thursday morning as heavy winds, cold temperatures and snow hampered efforts to clear the highway.
According to the Uinta County Sheriff’s Office, two fatalities were confirmed in the vehicle crashes and about 22 people were transported Evanston Regional Hospital for treatment. The Sheriff’s Office said some of those treated in Evanston were later transferred to hospitals in Utah for additional care.
Winter Weather Driving Safety
Winter weather can quickly change road conditions, so the Red Cross urges drivers to check forecasts and road reports before traveling, delay trips when conditions are poor and plan for the possibility of long delays. Safety reminders include slowing down, increasing following distance, avoiding cruise control on slick roads and giving snowplows extra space.
Be Ready If an Emergency Happens
The Red Cross urges drivers to carry an emergency kit year-round, as the right supplies can make all the difference in emergencies. For winter travel, the Red Cross of Utah stresses the need for a winter car emergency kit. Along with basic supplies, include warm clothing (blankets, hats, gloves and extra socks), traction aids (sand or cat litter) and tools like an ice scraper and a small shovel. For a full list of recommended supplies, visit redcross.org/kit.
