KEARNS, Utah (Nov. 2, 2023) — A family of six found themselves standing in front of the ruins of their home, the result of a Thursday morning fire. Lost in shock and uncertainty, they needed assistance. Recognizing this, Kearns Metro Township Mayor Kelly Bush called the American Red Cross of Utah, setting in motion a swift response to support the displaced family.
Firefighters from the United Fire Service quickly put out the fire, which started about 5 a.m., and asked the family if they needed help. Initially, the family declined, but soon realized they were unsure of their next steps. “They were overwhelmed and didn't know what to do next,” said Mayor Bush, “Once the immediate danger is over and you're left with the aftermath of a fire, the reality sets in.”
Upon hearing of the family's predicament, a neighbor reached out to Mayor Bush, who then contacted the Red Cross of Utah. “The neighbor wasn't aware that the Red Cross could help. That's exactly what the organization is here for," she explained.
Red Cross of Utah staff and volunteers immediately got in touch with the family, ensuring they had a safe place to stay, along with necessities such as food, clothing and prescription medicine replacements. “Our mission is to support those in need,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Utah, Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “In times of crisis, our dedicated team is ready to aid our community and ensure no one faces these challenges alone.”
Beyond blood drives
While the Red Cross of Utah is known for its blood drives, which supply most of the blood for hospitals in our state, Mayor Bush knew that the organization's services extend much further.
“The family and their neighbor were unaware of the full extent of services the Red Cross provides. Now, they can have conversations and let others know what the Red Cross can do,” she said.
The Red Cross offers a range of initiatives including nationwide disaster relief, local responses to home fires and floods, disaster preparedness training, support for military families, assistance in reuniting families separated by conflict or natural disasters and lifesaving blood collection efforts.
Preemptive fire safety measures
The Red Cross is also there with assistance before a fire. Residents seeking fire prevention assistance can schedule a free smoke alarm installation appointment at SoundTheAlarm.org/Utah. During these brief visits, Red Cross volunteers will also share information on preventing home fires, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
“If you are unable to afford a smoke alarm, or physically incapable of installing one or checking its batteries, reach out to the Utah Red Cross. We may be able to assist,” said Lafranca.
