SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 28, 2025) — Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the Greater Salt Lake Chapter of the American Red Cross of Utah, is deploying to Kentucky on Monday for a two-week mission to assist with disaster relief efforts. He will join nearly 200 other trained Red Cross disaster workers delivering critical aid to communities devastated by catastrophic flooding.
“The flooding has left families and communities devastated, searching for recovery solutions and long-term measures to prevent future disasters,” Lafranca said. “Red Cross volunteers are on the ground, helping the people of Kentucky recover from this tremendous loss. Our commitment to supporting them will continue in the weeks and months ahead.”
During his deployment, Lafranca will serve as part of the government and elected officials liaison team, working closely with local leaders to identify each community’s unique needs. This critical coordination will enable the Red Cross to provide targeted support where it is needed most.
The Red Cross Responds to Devastating Flooding
Kentucky experienced severe flooding after a powerful storm swept through the Southeast during the weekend of Feb. 14. The storm brought heavy rainfall and strong winds, compounded by record-breaking cold temperatures from a recent Arctic blast.
The flooding caused widespread destruction, including power outages, evacuations and water rescues. More than two dozen people lost their lives, and over 750 homes suffered damage. Red Cross volunteers are conducting damage assessments and connecting with impacted households to provide financial assistance and recovery support.
Responding Amid Frequent Disasters
Last year, the U.S. experienced 27 weather and climate disasters with damages exceeding $1 billion each, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This followed a record 28 billion-dollar disasters in 2023. The frequency and intensity of these events underscore the growing importance of preparing for and responding to crises.
Red Cross volunteers have been at the forefront of disaster relief efforts, delivering shelter, meals and emergency assistance to communities devastated by hurricanes, storms, wildfires and floods. Over the past four decades (1980–2022), the U.S. averaged eight major disasters per year, but the increase in recent years highlights an urgent need for continued support.
“Our volunteers’ unwavering resilience and dedication are truly inspiring,” Lafranca said. “However, this vital work depends on the strength and support of the community.”
