LA SAL, Utah (July 15, 2025) — In a significant step toward enhancing community resilience, the La Sal Recreation Special Service District has formally partnered with the American Red Cross of Utah to grant access to its Community Center on Highway 46 for emergency sheltering. This agreement ensures that the La Sal Community Center can serve as a safe place for residents during disasters, providing critical shelter and support when it’s needed most.
The importance of this partnership has been underscored by the ongoing Deer Creek Fire, which has forced evacuations and highlighted the need for accessible, well-equipped emergency shelters. The La Sal Community Center has long played a vital role in supporting the community during emergencies, and this agreement with the Red Cross further enhances its capacity to serve as a critical resource for disaster preparedness and response in the region.
“We are proud to partner with the American Red Cross of Utah to ensure our community is prepared to respond to emergencies,” said Kristl Johnson, Chair of the La Sal Recreation Special Service District Board. “The Deer Creek Fire is a stark reminder of how quickly disasters can strike, and this agreement will help us provide a safe and reliable space for those in need.”
The American Red Cross of Utah is equipped to quickly establish emergency shelters after a disaster, thanks to pre-established agreements and identified facilities that expedite response efforts. “Having access to the La Sal Community Center will allow us to respond more effectively to disasters like the Deer Creek Fire and provide comfort and care to those affected,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter.
First Formal Emergency Shelter Agreement in San Juan County
This agreement between the La Sal Community Center and the American Red Cross of Utah marks the first formal arrangement in San Juan County to designate a building for use during crises. Such agreements are critical in ensuring communities are prepared to respond effectively to disasters.
“The Red Cross views these agreements as strategic partnerships that strengthen our ability to aid communities in times of need,” said Donner. “This milestone in San Juan County will help ensure residents have a safe place to turn to during emergencies.”
Deer Creek Fire Continues to Threaten Communities
The Deer Creek Fire, which ignited near Old La Sal last week, has grown to nearly 13,000 acres, with containment efforts reaching an estimated 7%. The fire has crossed into Colorado, driven by strong winds and dry conditions, and has already destroyed multiple structures, including homes. Over 385 firefighters, supported by helicopters and air tankers, are working to contain the blaze.
Evacuation orders remain in effect for residents within a 5-mile radius of the fire, including Mountain Shadow Estates. The La Sal Community Center has been activated as a cooling center to assist evacuees, providing a critical resource for those displaced by the fire.
Join the team
All emergency sheltering efforts are supported by trained Red Cross disaster volunteers, usually volunteers from within the community. After initial training, Red Cross disaster volunteers are prepared to respond to local emergencies, such as assisting those displaced by home fires or wildfires. With experience and additional training, volunteers can deploy to major emergencies or disasters in Utah and across the country. To learn more about volunteer opportunities, visit redcross.org/DAT.
