LAYTON, Utah (Oct. 10, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is providing essential support to over 80 residents displaced by an early-morning fire at the Layton Meadows Apartments on Friday. The blaze destroyed a 24-unit building and damaged two neighboring units, leaving dozens of people without homes.
Red Cross volunteers will be on-site at the apartment complex office, located at 540 West 1425 North in Layton, on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to meet with residents and provide recovery services. Anyone affected by the fire can also call the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) for assistance at any time.
On Friday, the Red Cross of Utah opened an evacuation center at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 202 West 1675 North in Layton. The center provided displaced residents with essential services, including snacks, water, prescription medication replacement, eyeglass and medical equipment replacement and a safe place to stay. Mental health and spiritual care services were also available to help residents cope with the emotional toll of the disaster.
“Red Cross volunteers are always ready to respond when disaster strikes,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter. “Our dedicated team quickly stepped in to assist those affected by this devastating fire. We are committed to providing immediate relief and ongoing support to help these residents rebuild their lives.”
Community and Partners Rally to Support Fire Victims
The fire was reported around 6 a.m. Friday and quickly engulfed the 24-unit building at 480 West 1425 North. More than 80 residents were evacuated from three buildings, including approximately 40 residents from the building that was destroyed. While no serious injuries were reported, four responding police officers and one resident were treated for smoke inhalation, according to city officials. Two additional apartments in a neighboring building sustained smoke and water damage.
The Red Cross partnered with Layton Emergency Management, the Layton Fire Department, Layton and Davis County officials, Layton Animal Services and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to support the displaced residents. Local businesses, including McDonald’s, Chick-fil-A, Cracker Barrel and Starbucks, generously donated food and coffee to support those affected.
