SALT LAKE CITY (May 20, 2025) — With more than 39 million people expected to hit the road during Memorial Day Weekend, the American Red Cross of Utah is reminding motorists to stay alert on the road and to check or assemble an emergency kit for their vehicle. A new analysis from the National Safety Council (NSC) projects that congested highways could lead to nearly 450 traffic-related deaths and an estimated 50,000 injuries across the country over the holiday weekend.
Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter, emphasized the importance of safety as families prepare for trips to the beach, National Parks or visits with loved ones. “Before heading out this holiday, make sure your vehicle is in good condition and your route is planned in advance,” Smauldon said. “Buckle up and drive responsibly to keep the weekend safe for everyone.”
With many families expected to drive at least 50 miles or more, the American Red Cross of Utah advises motorists to prepare an emergency kit for their vehicles. “Emergencies can happen anytime, anywhere,” Smauldon added. “Having essential supplies and critical information can make all the difference in handling unexpected situations.”

Traffic Risks and Record Numbers
This Memorial Day Weekend, an estimated 45.1 million people are expected to travel domestically between Thursday and Monday, setting a new record for the holiday. Of those, over 39 million will likely travel by car. The NSC analysis indicates that 443 lives may be lost nationwide due to preventable traffic accidents, and more than 50,000 injuries could occur. The previous Memorial Day holiday travel record was set in 2005, with 44 million Americans traveling.
“Memorial Day weekend often means busier roads and greater risks for drivers,” said Mark Chung, Vice President of Safety Leadership and Advocacy at NSC. “While it’s encouraging to see yearly fatalities decline slightly, we’re still facing a crisis with nearly 120 people losing their lives on the road every single day.”
