SALT LAKE CITY (March 14, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah announced today a $17,500 donation from Mountain America Credit Union to assist Utah residents affected by home fires and other disasters. This generous contribution is the result from Mountain America’s ongoing pledge to donate $50 for each three-point shot made by the Brigham Young University (BYU) men’s basketball team during this season.
“Every three-pointer represents more than just points on the board—it symbolizes our commitment to leave a lasting mark on the communities we serve,” said Nathan Andersen, Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President at Mountain America. “With the American Red Cross and BYU, we are turning on-court success into meaningful community impact.”
This year marks the eighth season that Mountain America has partnered with BYU Athletics to support the Red Cross of Utah. Since 2018, Mountain America has contributed over $150,000 to help the Red Cross prevent, prepare for and respond to home fires and other emergencies across the state.
“Mountain America’s generous support helps enable us to respond immediately with comfort and care when disasters strike,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the Central and Southern Utah Chapter of the American Red Cross. “This critical funding supports disaster victims and helps fuel our lifesaving fire prevention programs, such as providing free smoke alarms and installations.”
Supporting Communities in Times of Need
Red Cross disaster response teams frequently assist Utah families impacted by home fires, the most common disaster in the United States. Last year, the Red Cross of Utah responded to more than 150 home fires, helping over 800 residents with immediate aid, including temporary shelter, food, recovery assistance and emotional support.
To address the persistent threat of home fires, the Red Cross also partners with local organizations to install free smoke alarms and provide fire safety education. Utah residents can sign up for free smoke alarm installation appointments at SoundTheAlarm.org/Utah. Last year alone, Red Cross volunteers installed over 1,000 free smoke alarms statewide.
Beyond disaster response, the Red Cross strengthens community resilience by offering CPR, first aid and disaster preparedness training. Additionally, the Red Cross supports veterans and military families through emergency communication services, financial assistance, and transition resources during deployments and homecomings.
