PROVO, Utah (Nov. 22, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Utah announced today Mountain America Credit Union donated $13,500 to support Utahns facing home fires and other disasters. This generous contribution comes from the credit union’s pledge to donate $250 for every touchdown scored by the BYU football team this season.
“Community involvement is essential to our mission at Mountain America Credit Union,” said Nathan Anderson, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Mountain America Credit Union. “Our partnership with BYU provides an exciting opportunity to intertwine their successes with our support of the American Red Cross of Utah to make a long-lasting impact in the communities we serve.”
This year marks the seventh season that Mountain America has partnered with BYU Athletics to support the Red Cross of Utah. Since 2018, Mountain America’s BYU cause marketing program has contributed over $150,000 to aid the Red Cross in preventing, preparing and responding to home fires and other disasters in Utah.
“Mountain America’s generous support helps ensure that the Red Cross of Utah can respond immediately with comfort and care when disasters happen,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “It’s a critical donation that supports people in need and allows us to continue our lifesaving fire prevention initiatives, such as providing free smoke alarms and installations in vulnerable communities.”
Most frequent disaster
Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers and staff frequently respond to home fires, providing immediate assistance to affected families. Home fires are the nation’s most common disaster. This year, the Red Cross of Utah staff and volunteers have responded to nearly 150 home fires, aiding over 500 people by offering emotional support, financial assistance and valuable recovery information. Last year, our team supported almost 800 residents affected by nearly 200 home fires and installed more than 550 free smoke alarms.
To address the ongoing threat of home fires, the Red Cross of Utah continues working with community partners to provide free smoke alarms and fire safety education. Residents interested in fire prevention assistance can schedule an appointment for free smoke alarm installation at SoundTheAlarm.org/Utah.
