SALT LAKE CITY (Jan. 6, 2025) — January marks the 56th National Blood Donor Month, a time to honor the lifesaving contributions of blood donors and raise awareness about the urgent need for donations. This year, the American Red Cross of Utah is emphasizing the importance of regular blood donations, particularly during the challenging winter months, to ensure a steady blood supply for patients in need.
Winter is notoriously hard on blood collection efforts. Severe weather, including snowstorms and freezing temperatures, often forces the cancellation of blood drives, while seasonal illnesses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV lead to missed appointments and fewer eligible donors. These factors can put the nation’s blood supply at risk, highlighting the need for consistent donations.
“Blood donors are the unsung heroes of our communities,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “The need for blood is constant, and while tragic events can inspire people to step forward, it’s the regular donations given day in and day out that ensure we’re prepared for any situation. Every donation is a lifeline for patients across the country.”
Blood Donor Super Bowl Sweepstakes
This January, the American Red Cross is partnering with the National Football League (NFL) for the sixth consecutive year to celebrate National Blood Donor Month. Together, the Red Cross and the NFL are encouraging fans and donors to make a difference by giving blood or platelets to support patients in need.

The History of National Blood Donor Month
National Blood Donor Month was established in January 1970 with a proclamation by President Richard Nixon to raise awareness about the critical need for blood donations during winter, when supplies often drop. This annual observance honors donors and encourages new ones, highlighting the lifesaving role of blood donation. Over time, it has become a unifying effort, bringing together organizations, communities, and volunteers to ensure a stable blood supply year-round.
