SALT LAKE CITY (Aug. 17, 2023) — On this National Nonprofit Day, Thursday, August 17, the American Red Cross of Utah is calling attention to the invaluable contributions of all nonprofits across the state. In Utah and throughout the nation, charitable and philanthropic organizations work tirelessly, often with limited resources, to support those in need and tackle society’s most challenging issues.
This year, the American Red Cross of Utah is praising the ongoing efforts by Red Cross volunteers to assist communities affected by the devastating wildfires in Maui. Following the recent wildfire disaster, more than 300 Red Cross volunteers from Utah, Hawaii and across the country have come together to provide critical relief to impacted resident.
"Red Cross volunteers’ unwavering dedication and compassion continues to make a difference to the people of Maui,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. "Volunteers stand ready to help whether it’s a disaster affecting an entire community or a home fire impacting one family.”
The Red Cross recognizes the importance of partnerships with other local nonprofit organizations to amplify the impact to the community. On National Nonprofit Day, Ruster invites all Utahns to join her in acknowledging the selfless individuals who volunteer and work for charitable groups, making lasting changes in our community. "Nonprofit organizations enrich and improve all aspects of the quality of life in our community," she added.
Non-profit organizations support our community in so many ways like food pantries, new coats to those who would go without, college scholarships to students from underserved communities and many other ways. Every day, the work of nonprofits touches the lives of children, families and senior citizens, making a meaningful difference.
About National Nonprofit Day
National Nonprofit Day, established in 2017 and celebrated on August 17, coincides with the date of the signing of the Tariff Act of 1894, which authorized exemptions for nonprofit corporations and charitable institutions. It’s a day to recognize the contributions of nonprofit staff and volunteers while highlighting the importance of supporting their efforts through donations, volunteering or any other form of assistance.
