NORTH LOGAN, Utah (July 20, 2025) — As Utah faces an intense wildfire season with over 600 fires burning more than 85,000 acres statewide, the American Red Cross of Utah partnered with Cache County Emergency Management and North Logan CERT on Saturday to conduct a full-scale wildfire shelter simulation.
Red Cross volunteers and North Logan Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members transformed the Hansen Family Sports Complex into a simulated emergency evacuation shelter. The exercise included opening, operating and closing the shelter, as well as coordinating with feeding partners to practice providing meals during an emergency and to feed the participants.
“This training is critical to ensuring we’re ready to respond when a wildfire or other disaster strikes in Utah,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah Chapter. “With wildfires threatening homes and communities across Utah, it’s essential that we and our partners are prepared to provide safe shelter, meals and support to those affected.”
Community Preparedness
Simulations like the one held Saturday in North Logan allow volunteers and staff to practice setting up shelters, managing logistics such as registration, food service and medical care, and ensuring the safety and well-being of evacuees in a low-stress environment. These exercises improve response times, identify logistical challenges and enhance coordination among responders, ultimately strengthening disaster readiness.
Wildfires Continue to Threaten Communities
The shelter simulation comes as wildfires continue to burn and force evacuations across Utah. The Monroe Canyon Fire in Sevier County has burned more than 9,000 acres, prompting evacuations as firefighters work to contain the blaze. Similarly, the Deer Creek Fire in San Juan County has consumed over 16,000 acres, leading to evacuation orders for affected residents.
“Wildfires like the Monroe Canyon Fire and the Deer Creek Fire remind us of the importance of being trained, prepared and ready to act quickly,” Smauldon said. “This exercise not only strengthens our response capabilities but also reinforces the vital partnerships that make our work possible.”

Finding a Shelter
The Red Cross of Utah works closely with emergency management and community partners throughout the state to coordinate relief efforts and provide critical support during disasters. Red Cross shelters are open to everyone in need, and all disaster assistance is free.
The Red Cross is committed to ensuring that no one is turned away during a time of crisis, offering a safe and welcoming space for all individuals and families affected by disasters. Aid is provided to everyone, regardless of race, religion, gender identity, sexual orientation or citizenship status. No form of identification is required to enter a shelter—only a name and the location of residence prior to the disaster. Those in need of assistance can visit redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767) for more information.
Evacuees heading to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each family member, such as prescription medications, clothing, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and comfort items. Families with children are encouraged to bring diapers, formula, toys and other items for family members who have unique needs.
