SALT LAKE CITY (Sept. 6, 2025) — September is National Preparedness Month, and the American Red Cross of Utah is encouraging families across the state to take action now to protect their loved ones before disaster strikes. Emergencies can happen anywhere and at any time — from wildfires and floods to home fires and power outages — but a few simple steps can make all the difference.
“Preparedness doesn’t have to feel overwhelming,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “We’re asking Utahns to take just four easy steps this month. By taking time now, families can reduce stress and stay safer when the unexpected happens.”

About National Preparedness Month
National Preparedness Month, established in 2004, was created in response to the tragic events of September 11, 2001. Recognizing the critical importance of emergency preparedness, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) partnered with organizations like the American Red Cross to launch this annual campaign, aimed at promoting readiness and resilience across the nation.
