SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 15, 2022) — The American Red Cross of Utah announced today it is accepting applications to this summer’s Leadership Development Camp for high school students. This year’s camp will return to in-person activities.
The Leadership Development Camp will bring together 80 Utah high school students on June 20-24 at Camp Pinecliff near Coalville. For five days, high school students build confidence and cultivate core leadership skills such as teamwork, public speaking, and diversity/cultural understanding. These skills can be applied on school campuses and later in life.
“This year marks the 12th anniversary of the Leadership Development Camp demonstrating the Red Cross’ commitment to train and empower future humanitarian leaders in our communities,” said Kristy Denlein, Regional Volunteer Services Officer. “We believe the students will find the camp a special place where they can be themselves, take safe risks, and be a part of something bigger than themselves.”
The overnight camp is for local students currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grade or the home school equivalent. The cost of the non-profit camp is $250 and includes cabin lodging at Camp Pinecliff, meals, and materials. A reduced rate is available for those who qualify. The camp will have COVID-19 safety protocols in place.
Throughout the week, Red Cross youth volunteers and staff members will create sessions and activities that reinforce delegates’ individual and team leadership skills. “The youth will come back from the conference as stronger individuals better equipped to embrace the diversity of those around them,” explained Denlein. “Delegates form friendships that can last a lifetime, and moreover, they will become leaders who make a difference in their schools and communities.”
"I personally feel that LDC was the beginning of a new me," said Former Delegate Iris Turner. "Not only did I learn how to believe in myself, but I felt that others believed in my abilities, too, and you don't just find that anywhere."
