SALT LAKE CITY (Oct. 9, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is encouraging residents to review the flood risks in their area and take preparedness steps following the National Weather Service’s issue of a flood watch for the state.
Hurricane Priscilla formed in the Pacific Ocean earlier this week and has continued to be downgraded as it heads for landfall. While the storm is expected to hit mainly southern and central Utah Thursday night, the National Weather Service is anticipating heavy storms throughout Utah over the weekend.
“Flooding can happen quickly and with little warning, as we saw last week,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “But there’s key preparedness steps anyone can take to ensure their safety during the storms.”
Know Your Risk and Prepare Now
The Red Cross urges residents to:
• Make an emergency plan. Identify evacuation routes and practice with your household.
• Build an emergency kit. Be sure to include water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, batteries, medications and first-aid supplies. More suggested items can be found at RedCross.org/Prepare.
• Protect important items. Store valuable documents in waterproof containers and consider elevating utilities or appliances in flood-prone areas.
Residents are also encouraged to sign up for Red Cross Emergency App. This free resource can guide you and your loved ones before, during, and after a disaster. Access short guides to help you prepare, receive National Weather Service alerts, view live weather maps, and find open Red Cross shelters and services near you. You can learn more on our website at RedCross.org/App.
Red Cross Flood Response and Preparedness Support
The Red Cross works year-round to help communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from disasters— including floods. In addition to offering disaster relief and shelter during emergencies, the organization provides Preparedness Presentations to schools, workplaces, and community groups to help Utahns stay safe before disaster strikes.
“Even one inch of water can cause thousands of dollars in damage,” Donner said. “Simple steps like reviewing your flood risk, preparing a kit, and knowing where to go if you need to evacuate can make all the difference.”
