SALT LAKE CITY (July 9, 2025) — U.S. Rep. Celeste Maloy will honor the American Red Cross of Utah with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition, celebrating the organization’s vital mission to provide lifesaving blood to those in need. On Thursday, July 10, at noon, the Congresswoman will visit the Greater Salt Lake Blood Donation Center, 6616 South 900 East, Murray, to present the recognition to Red Cross staff and volunteers and personally contribute by donating blood.
This Congressional recognition highlights the strong partnership between Utahns and the Red Cross of Utah, emphasizing a shared commitment to building a resilient community prepared for emergencies. Rep. Maloy, who represents Utah’s Second Congressional District, has expressed deep appreciation for the Red Cross volunteers in Utah who help their neighbors during emergencies, as well as blood donors who contribute to saving lives.
“Growing up, my mom always encouraged us to donate blood—she received several transfusions as a young mother, so this cause has always been close to our family,” said Rep. Maloy. “When I heard the American Red Cross was in need of donations, I knew I had to help. Utahns have a long tradition of helping their neighbors, and I hope others will join me in giving blood to support those in need.”
Donors can conveniently schedule an appointment using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting redcross.org/GiveBlood or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).
Why Summer Donations Matter
Summer is a time when the need for blood remains constant, but donations often decline. With schools—key donation sites—on break and regular donors traveling, it can be challenging to maintain a steady blood supply. At the same time, increased travel and outdoor activities during the “100 Deadly Days of Summer,” the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day, often lead to a rise in accidents and medical emergencies requiring blood transfusions.
“Donating blood isn’t just about saving lives—it’s about creating moments that matter. Every drop you give could mean a parent holding their child again, a friend sharing one more laugh, or someone in our community getting another chance at tomorrow. Be the reason someone gets their moment,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter.
For Benjamin, the mission of blood donation is deeply personal. After experiencing a medical emergency requiring four units of blood, he shared his appreciation for those who donate blood selflessly, saying, “I used to donate because I knew there was always a need for blood, and it was the right thing to do. When I needed a transfusion, four generous donors ensured the blood I needed was available when I needed it most.”
The Red Cross plays a vital role in meeting this demand, collecting 40% of the nation’s blood supply to support more than 2,500 hospitals and transfusion centers. To meet these needs, the Red Cross must collect approximately 12,500 blood donations and 3,000 platelet donations every day. In Utah, nearly 45 hospitals rely on the Red Cross for their blood supply.
