SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah (April 27, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is staffing an evacuation shelter in South Salt Lake tonight after fire and emergency officials ordered nearly 400 residents to leave their homes. A vehicle fire caused by a fallen power line ignited a gas leak, forcing the evacuation of residents. The shelter is located at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3805 S. Main St.
“We are committed to providing our community with the resources and support they need during this challenging time,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Utah Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “Our dedicated volunteers and staff are working closely with first responders and emergency management to ensure everyone stays safe during the evacuation.”
The shelter will remain staffed as long as needed, including overnight and into Monday morning if required. Small pets are allowed at the shelter, offering evacuees peace of mind by enabling them to bring pets along.
“Pets are family, and ensuring they have a safe place is essential,” Lafranca said. “Allowing pets at the shelter reduces stress for owners and helps them focus on their well-being during this difficult time.”
Mandatory Evacuation Order
Evacuations were ordered Sunday evening for a South Salt Lake neighborhood following a gas leak that ignited into flames. The evacuation zone covers the area from 3300 South to 3500 South, and from West Temple to 200 West in South Salt Lake, with at least 370 residents directed to leave immediately for their safety.
The incident started when a truck fire broke out, reportedly caused by a fallen power line. While firefighters worked to contain the blaze, they discovered flames coming from the ground, which led to the identification of a gas leak. Crews from the gas company are now working to locate and shut off the affected lines. Officials have indicated that road excavation may be necessary to fully address the issue. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and continue to urge residents to avoid the affected area until further notice.
Finding a Shelter
The Red Cross urges everyone to follow instructions from local authorities and evacuate immediately if instructed.
For those who have already evacuated, don’t return home until officials say it is safe to do so. Those needing assistance can visit redcross.org/shelter or call 1-800-RED-CROSS (800-733-2767).
Evacuees going to a Red Cross shelter should bring essential items for each family member, such as prescription medications, clothing, blankets, hygiene supplies, important documents and comfort items. Families with children are encouraged to bring diapers, formula, toys, and other items for family members who have unique needs.
