STANSBURY PARK, Utah (Feb. 11, 2025) — Students at Stansbury Park Elementary School will proudly present a check for $1,915.05 to the American Red Cross of Utah on Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 10 a.m. The funds were raised through a student-led, school-wide initiative to aid communities devastated by the Los Angeles wildfires.
Firefighters from the North Tooele Fire District, who traveled to Los Angeles to help battle the destructive wildfires, will also be present at the event. These courageous first responders will join the students to celebrate their meaningful contribution and share firsthand accounts of the challenges faced by impacted communities.
“We are deeply moved by the generosity and incredible dedication of these young students to help people in need,” said Jeremiah Lafranca, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Utah Greater Salt Lake Chapter. “Their compassion and the support of the North Tooele firefighters emphasize how entire communities can come together to make a meaningful impact. These funds will help the Red Cross to assist families rebuilding their lives.”
A Lesson in Empathy and Action
Inspired by news coverage of the wildfire devastation, including stories of a Los Angeles school destroyed by the fast-moving fires, a group of second-grade students initiated the effort to help children like themselves. The movement quickly gained momentum, with students across all grades contributing dollars and spare change, encouraged by their parents’ and teachers’ support and guidance.
“The students felt compelled to take action after discussing the destruction they saw and how it affected so many kids and families,” said Jackee Finucan, a second-grade teacher. “This project became a powerful lesson in teamwork and compassion. Knowing their efforts will make a difference has been incredibly rewarding for all of us.”
Funds raised by Stansbury Park Elementary students will provide vital assistance, such as emergency shelter, meals, relief supplies, and emotional support through the American Red Cross’s disaster relief programs.
Honoring Our Heroes
The presence of the North Tooele firefighters at the event emphasizes the vital role of first responders during disasters. Their dedication to protecting lives during the Los Angeles wildfires brought hope and relief to affected communities.
“Having firefighters here to celebrate with the students makes this day even more meaningful,” said Lafranca. “The students’ fundraising efforts and the firefighters’ bravery showcase how people, big or small, can make a huge difference when they work together and support those in need.”
Continuing Support for Wildfire Relief
Though the massive fires that destroyed more than 16,000 structures in California are contained, recovery efforts are far from over for many. The American Red Cross remains on the front lines, providing ongoing assistance to affected families.
Hundreds of Red Cross workers are on-site in California, including providing shelter for over 450 displaced people still in emergency shelters. So far, the Red Cross has coordinated more than 14,500 overnight stays in shelters and provided, alongside partners, over 128,000 meals and snacks. As communities reopen, the Red Cross has provided over 100,000 relief items such as water, cleaning kits, gloves, flashlights and face masks.
