SALT LAKE CITY (Dec. 12, 2024) — The American Red Cross of Utah is proud to announce the delivery of 10 pallets of food yesterday, totaling 18,000 pounds, to the Veterans Food Pantry at the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center in Salt Lake City. This significant donation was made possible through a collaborative effort with Kent’s Market, Black Rifle Coffee Company and Renewal by Anderson, who answered the Red Cross’s call to combat food insecurity among local veterans.
The Red Cross of Utah initially donated food to the pantry and reached out to community partners to help bolster resources. The overwhelming response resulted in the support for veterans and their families, ensuring access to critical meals and supplies, particularly as the holiday season approaches. On Wednesday, Red Cross of Utah volunteers and staff delivered the 10 pallets of donated food to the Veterans Food Pantry.
“Supporting our veterans is a core part of our community’s mission, and we are deeply grateful for the generosity of Kent’s Market, Black Rifle Coffee Company and Renewal by Anderson,” said Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region. “Their contributions demonstrate the power of collective action and community spirit.”
Fighting Hunger for Veterans and Military Families
Food insecurity is an ongoing challenge for many veterans and active-duty service members. A study by Feeding America reveals that one in nine working-age veterans lives in a household experiencing food insecurity, while one in four active-duty service members has faced food insecurity. Additionally, the U.S. Department of Defense reported in 2022 that around 24% of active-duty service members experienced food insecurity in 2020.
This joint effort not only addresses an urgent issue but also strengthens ties between the Red Cross, the veteran and military community, and local organizations such as Kent’s Market, Black Rifle Coffee Company and Renewal by Anderson. These businesses are dedicated to creating positive change and improving the quality of life for the community.
“The Red Cross is an exceptional partner, and we are profoundly grateful to have them by our side,” said Kati Calhoun, Vice President of Marketing at Kent’s Market. “The dedication of Red Cross volunteers and staff to supporting our veterans and active-duty military heroes is truly inspiring.”
