SALT LAKE CITY (Nov. 14, 2025) — The American Red Cross of Utah is thrilled to honor the extraordinary dedication of its volunteers at the annual Volunteer Recognition Event, taking place on Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, at the Hogle Zoo (2600 Sunnyside Ave. S., Salt Lake City) from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s event will celebrate the remarkable contributions of 31 outstanding volunteers who have gone above and beyond in their service, as well as recognize the vital efforts of over 2,000 volunteers statewide who have collectively strengthened their communities through their commitment to the Red Cross mission.
The ceremony will spotlight the incredible work of volunteers who have supported key Red Cross initiatives, including disaster relief efforts, emergency preparedness, assistance to military families, lifesaving training and youth preparedness programs. These volunteers have played a critical role in responding to local emergencies, such as residential fires and flooding, while also contributing to national disaster relief efforts.
Celebrating a Year of Dedication and Impact
Over the past year, Utah volunteers have contributed more than 70,000 hours of service, making a profound difference in the lives of those affected by disasters and emergencies. Heidi Ruster, Chief Executive Officer of the American Red Cross Utah/Nevada Region, expressed her gratitude for their tireless efforts.
“Volunteers are the lifeblood of the American Red Cross, driving our mission forward through their service and commitment,” she said. “Whether they’re supporting the military community, installing smoke alarms to protect families, providing preparedness information or responding to local or nationwide disasters, their efforts create a lasting impact. With more than 90% of our workforce comprised of volunteers, we simply could not achieve our vital work without their dedication.”
Highlighting Exceptional Volunteer Leadership
The event’s highlight will be the presentation of the prestigious Clara Barton Honor Award for Meritorious Volunteer Leadership to David Kenison of Orem. Named after the founder of the American Red Cross, this award recognizes outstanding volunteer leadership and dedication.
“Dave has been an extraordinary leader and a cornerstone of the Central and Southern Utah Chapter,” said Benjamin Donner, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Central and Southern Utah Chapter. “His ability to combine strategic vision with hands-on leadership has transformed our programs, strengthened our volunteer network and ensured critical services reach those in need during disasters.”
Kenison’s decades of service have focused on improving preparedness and response efforts. From leading the Home Fire Campaign to coordinating the Shelter Strike Team, his emphasis on training, mentorship and inclusivity has expanded volunteer engagement and enhanced the chapter’s operational resilience.
“Dave’s unwavering commitment to the Red Cross mission has not only elevated our chapter’s capabilities but has also inspired countless volunteers to serve with the same passion and purpose,” Donner added.
A Call for Compassionate Volunteers
Ruster emphasized the growing need for volunteers and encouraged community members to join the Red Cross mission.
“Every day, I am thankful for the committed volunteers who form the backbone of the American Red Cross,” Ruster said. “With the rise in frequency and severity of disasters, the need for volunteers has never been greater. I urge community members to join our ranks and help make a difference.”
