The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports space heaters are most often responsible for home heating fires and a Red Cross survey showed that more than half of us have used one.

Growing up in Kenya, I was used to manageable cold seasons where a light sweater or jacket was enough to keep warm.
Now, living in the United States, I’ve adapted to snowy winters and icy winds. While central heating keeps my home warm, I rely on a space heater for extra warmth on especially cold nights.
Last December, I had a close call with my space heater. My daughter was sitting on the floor, painting, while I relaxed with a Christmas novel. We both needed extra warmth, so we placed the heater close to our feet. She painted happily, snacking on pretzels, while I sipped my hot cocoa. When she was done, she ran off to her many other “engagements” like any busy child.
Deep into my book, I suddenly smelled burning plastic. Alarmed, I looked over and saw that the pretzel container had warped from the heat. Thankfully, it hadn’t melted or caught fire, but it was a wake-up call; a fire could have started.
That moment made me reflect on the importance of space heater safety. I learned that small mistakes can cause significant damage, and I wanted to share my story to help others stay safe this winter.
Space heaters can add comfort and warmth to your home, but they need to be used with care.

Here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:
My near-accident last December was a powerful reminder that even small oversights can have serious consequences. As we embrace the cozy comforts of winter, let’s prioritize safety.
With a little care and attention, we can keep our homes warm, secure, and ready for the season. Winter warmth doesn’t have to come with unnecessary risks—stay warm, stay safe, and protect what matters most: you and your loved ones.
