Hispanic Heritage Month undoubtedly holds a special place in Raiza Ramirez’s heart. Born and raised in Venezuela, Raiza moved to the United States in 2016 to pursue new opportunities and experiences, and September 15 kicks off a time to reflect on the journey that brought her to where she is today.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is an opportunity to remember our roots, where we come from, our families, and our traditions,” Raiza said. “It is an excellent opportunity to show the younger generations what we are made of and where we come from.”
As a dedicated volunteer for the American Red Cross Northwest Region, Raiza embodies the spirit of giving back and inclusivity. She joined the Red Cross in June 2023 and serves as a public relations volunteer: sending press releases, serving on-call to monitor disaster response information, and promoting Red Cross programs and services throughout Washington and northern Idaho. Perhaps her most influential role, however, is serving as a bilingual spokesperson to share Red Cross resources with the Spanish-speaking community.
“Raiza is an incredible asset to our communications team,” said Betsy Robertson, Communications Director for the Red Cross Northwest Region. “She has repeatedly stepped up to do interviews with local Spanish news outlets to discuss topics like the need for blood. She was also the face of a recent public service announcement for our home fire campaign and continues to show up to her volunteer work at the Red Cross with an eagerness to help. We’re grateful to have her on our team to help reach our Spanish-speaking communities.”
Raiza’s willingness to help wherever needed makes her an exceptional volunteer with the Red Cross, and it’s a quality she partly credits to her Venezuelan heritage.
“The city where I was born and raised is known as the city of friendliness,” she said. “I grew up in a family that helps without expecting anything in return. I like to help those who need it and help the community because that's how I was raised.”
With her passion for helping others and commitment to inclusivity, Raiza's story is a testament to the diversity and richness of Hispanic heritage celebrated from September 15 through October 15. As Raiza navigates her cultural identity and community service journey, she says she finds strength in her roots and the connections she has forged through her work at the American Red Cross.
