For many in the Pacific Northwest, Labor Day weekend marks one last chance to hike in the Cascades, paddle out on Lake Washington, or gather with family and friends for a backyard cookout. But this year, celebrations come with an added challenge: extreme heat.
Much of Washington and Oregon remains under a heat advisory, with highs pushing into the 90s and even breaking triple digits in Portland. Overnight lows in the mid-60s mean little relief when the sun goes down. These hot nights pose particular risks for older adults, young children, and those without air conditioning at home.
Officials across the region are already seeing the toll. In Clackamas County, more than 100 people have visited emergency rooms for heat-related illness, and at least two deaths have been linked to the heat. King County and Eastern Washington hospitals are also reporting an uptick in heat exhaustion and dehydration cases.
