The atmospheric river event that led to rising rivers in Western Washington and the evacuation of thousands of households this week is also impacting communities in Eastern Washington. On Thursday, the Red Cross opened an evacuation shelter in Cashmere due to rising water on the Wenatchee River. Tonight, the Red Cross opened a second emergency shelter in Richland, triggered by rising water on the Yakima River.
As the situation continues to evolve, we are working with our partners and state and local officials to support affected communities with safe shelter, meals, relief supplies and a shoulder to lean on.
We are working with state and local officials and emergency responders to keep shelters operational as more families evacuate flood-impacted communities. Shelter locations are shifting as conditions change and emergency crews respond to where the need is greatest.
Anyone who has been affected by the flooding is welcome to stop by a shelter to get information, a hot meal, charge their phone, and get other essential support. Find open shelters on redcross.org, the free Red Cross Emergency app or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS (800-733-2767).
