National Hispanic Heritage Month, observed from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 in the U.S. is a time for unity and appreciation of the diverse contributions and cultural heritage of Hispanic and Latino Americans. By acknowledging achievements and values, this celebration reinforces the idea that diversity strengthens the nation and fosters a more inclusive society. This month Red Cross LA celebrates the contributions of local Latino workforce members.

Torrance resident Griselda Villalobos donated her first pint of blood in the 1990s as a senior at Banning High School. Since then, her commitment to helping others has evolved into a calling. To date, Villalobos has donated over 17 gallons of blood and 300 platelet units. In addition to being a dedicated American Red Cross volunteer for the Los Angeles Region, Villalobos was honored as a blood donation hero during the 2024 Hometown Heroes Awards ceremony.
However, the road to her altruistic efforts wasn’t easy. There were times when Villalobos couldn’t donate blood due to a low hemoglobin count—a common reason for donation deferment, often related to low iron levels—which left her feeling discouraged. After consulting with her doctors, Villalobos realized she was healthy enough to donate blood platelets more frequently. She now donates about once a week.
“I don't have anybody in my family or anybody I know that suffers from cancer, but I understand how the illness takes a toll on the body,” Villalobos said.
“I learned that donating platelets mainly helps cancer patients because they have low platelet counts after their chemo. Knowing this made me want to continue to do as many donations as I could to hopefully help as many patients as I could.”
With four different blood donation options—whole blood, power red, platelet, and plasma—Villalobos researched and informed herself about what worked best for her. Since platelets play a crucial role in cancer treatments, organ transplants and other surgical procedures, she found platelet donations to be the most effective way for her to contribute to her community. She believes anyone can take similar first steps to donate and help patients facing life-threatening conditions.
Villalobos also volunteers as a Red Cross blood services ambassador and as a disaster action team member, working directly with the community in times of need. She provides disaster relief services and offers support, guidance, and supplies following disasters.
“It makes me feel good to be able to help people out,” said Villalobos, who will earn her master’s degree in preparedness and emergency management this fall. “I get a sense of accomplishment, and you know, a feeling of doing something right.”
Volunteering for the Red Cross has also inspired Villalobos to engage closely with the Latino community, listen to their stories, and amplify their voices. She encourages more people in the community to donate blood, as there is a high demand for diverse blood types.
“I'm more open and not as self-conscious as I used to be,” said Villalobos.” I just feel like it strengthened my compassion and my empathy for people and for those that are impacted by disaster, or who need blood services.”
For her generosity, commitment, and unwavering efforts to help those in need, we recognize Villalobos as a true hero of her community. You too can be a hero by becoming a Red Cross volunteer. For more information visit redcross.org/volunteer.
