By DeAnne Todd/American Red Cross
When Mo and Todd Baker’s first child was nine months old, the couple discovered they were expecting a second baby. However, their joy quickly turned into fear and uncertainty during a routine check-up, when they learned of a rare condition that posed a risk to the fetus. As they navigated this uncertain path, the Baker’s were informed their unborn son, Beckett, would require special medical support to have a chance at a healthy life. They also learned the American Red Cross was prepared to assist them, assuring that all necessary resources were readily available to save their son.
Mo’s body was producing antibodies that were attacking the baby's red blood cells. To ensure the best chance of survival, their son would need intrauterine blood transfusions—a procedure where doctors give a baby blood while still in the womb to deliver healthy red blood cells critical for life.
The Bakers learned that the blood used for fetal transfusions was very specific and the Red Cross was fully prepared to begin processing donated blood immediately, ensuring it would be available when Beckett was ready for his transfusion and for any subsequent required procedures.
Over a twelve-week period, Beckett underwent four intrauterine transfusions before being born prematurely at thirty-five weeks. Three weeks after his birth, he received his 5th and final transfusion. By the time he was fourteen weeks old, he was successfully producing and maintaining his own red blood cells. The transfusions proved to be a remarkable success, ultimately saving Baby Beckett’s life.
Red Cross sends pediatric specific blood products to hospitals throughout the country every day, yet only a small number of donors can meet this very specific medical need. Learn if you carry the “Baby Blood” trait by becoming a donor. Make your appointment today at redcrossblood.org.
