“I don’t consider myself disabled,” says Mike Bunch, a Red Cross volunteer. “I just do things differently.”
As disaster disability Integration volunteer, Mike ensures people with access and functional needs are supported during crises. He strives to build an inclusive and equitable environment for all.
Mike’s mission is personal. In 2021, he experienced a sudden ‘complete neurological shutdown’ that led to him being classified as disabled, an often-used label that he rejects as too limiting.
A Red Cross volunteer for 27 years, Mike’s perspective fuels his commitment to help others with similar challenges, making sure they receive resources and support during disasters.
We met Mike at the Red Cross shelter in Pasadena, where he was assisting residents displaced by the Southern California wildfires. He explained the process he follows as soon as he arrives on-site.
He first surveys the shelter, carefully identifying and addressing potential accessibility barriers. He looks for issues such as cots positioned too closely together, preventing wheelchair access; insecure floor tarps easily caught by walkers, or limited access to showers and parking.
By promptly resolving challenges, Mike makes the shelter a safe, comfortable and hospitable space for all residents.
Once the space is assessed, Mike connects personally with residents. “How are you doing? Do you have access or functional needs? How can we support you?” he asks them.
These conversations help Mike gain a deeper understanding of individual needs, whether it’s a bariatric bed, wheelchair or TTY-enabled phone.
Working with community partners, Mike and other volunteers on the team have secured local resources to help dozens of people in the wildfire shelters navigate life with dignity.
