Fathers like Bee Kong—Regional Volunteer Services Officer for the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region—are the everyday heroes who show up when it matters most. Whether they're coordinating volunteers, responding to emergencies, or teaching their children the importance of giving back, these dads embody the Red Cross values of compassion, courageand community.
Their commitment strengthens more than just their own families—it strengthens our entire mission. With every act of service, they're shaping a legacy that empowers the next generation to step up, lend a hand and carry the torch of humanity forward.
What started as an act of community service evolved into a lifelong commitment to the Red Cross. Bee’s journey from high school volunteer to dedicated employee and a proud father of two, encouraging his children to get involved, is testament to the power of service.
It all began his high school freshman year, when Bee joined his local Red Cross youth club. That experience ignited a spark and helped shape who he is today. In college, he stayed involved through the Leadership Development Camp, balancing his desire to make a difference.
Not long after graduating, Bee joined the Red Cross as an employee, bringing a unique perspective to the same program he once participated in as a youth volunteer.
Since, he has remained a dedicated employee for over 20 years, supporting both local and national programs. His commitment has not only shaped his career but also his personal life.
As a father, Bee carries the lessons of his journey and shares them with his family. At the annual Volunteer Excellence awards, it's become a tradition for his daughter Penny, 11, to hand out the awards, while his son Kenny, 13, supports behind the scenes; at Sound the Alarm events, the whole Kong family goes out in the community, installing smoke alarms and educating families with Bee's wife, Caroline, lending a helping hand.
For Bee and Caroline, it’s about showing the way for the next generation of humanitarians. They encourage their kids to take initiative and ownership of their Red Cross experience. Instead of assigning tasks, they give them space to explore and find their footing.
"Introducing volunteerism to my kids at an early age helps them learn humanitarians make the world better by sharing the gift of time and talent" shared Bee.
That approach has led to many proud moments. Like when their daughter stepped up to translate for a Spanish-speaking resident during a Sound the Alarm event. Or when their son was recognized for his leadership. These are the moments Bee and Caroline hope for: when their kids show confidence, compassion and initiative.
Bee hopes his children continue to embrace the opportunities the Red Cross has to offer. For Bee, this is what fatherhood is about: leading with love, teaching through lived experience and building a legacy of compassion and service.
If you know a young person aged 13 to 24 in Los Angeles who wants to make a difference, the Red Cross Youth & Young Adult Services program is a fantastic opportunity. With over 2,000 youth volunteers, the program offers leadership development, community service and hands-on training in areas like disaster preparedness, health and safety and international services. Youth can join local Red Cross Clubs at their schools or participate in the Youth Corps, which organizes regional activities and service projects. To get started, youth must register online and those under 18 will need parental consent. More information is available at redcross.org/local/california/los-angeles/volunteer.
