In honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, the American Red Cross is proud to highlight Claudia Alvarez, a volunteer caseworker in the Los Angeles Region whose dedication shines through her work with disaster-affected families. Claudia provides support to people both during and after crises, offering not only resources but also empathy, trust and hope.
“I joined during the Covid era, serving as an online volunteer caseworker” Claudia said. “As part of a team, I provided recovery services by giving resource information to families.”
After Covid, Claudia remained in her volunteer role because she saw a need in the Spanish speaking communities. The people she supports find comfort with her because she understands, speaks and articulates with them in much the same way as she does in her own home. Claudia’s casework goes beyond skills—it’s her ability to exchange information within the same culture and language that fosters trust and creates safe, supportive conversations.
Claudia describes the monthly volunteer meetings in her chapter as deeply rewarding. Volunteers share stories within their own group and learn from other departments, giving her a broader sense of connection and fulfillment. She values seeing the faces of fellow volunteers and learning about the impact they’re making.
Claudia shared how the people she supports value Spanish-speaking service providers who partner with the Red Cross. Their familiarity and experience inspire trust, making it easier for clients to follow through with the help offered. As a devoted Red Cross volunteer, Claudia knows how to connect with her community.
“When I talk to families, I listen to what they are going through” Claudia shared. “They speak about providing for their families and moving forward as a family. I can empathize and can support what they are going through. They vent and speak of their woes and plan, and I listen to them.”
Claudia urges others to become involved in their community. This includes knowing oneself, being respectful and treating the other as you would like to be treated. She values learning and said, “It’s important to share the space and be open with one another as a Latina and/or community member.”
As a dedicated volunteer, Claudia brings both gentle determination and genuine compassion to her role. She readily steps beyond her comfort zone to collaborate with partners and ensure clients receive the support they need. Her openness and commitment shine through, bringing a sense of comfort and hope to those the Red Cross serves when disaster strikes.
