LOS ANGELES, Oct. 17, 2024 — The American Red Cross in collaboration with Creative Noize, Supervsn, Family Style, Donovan’s Yard and Hubble Studio, presents the LA Blood Drive, a community-centered event dedicated to raising awareness about the urgent need for blood donations to support sickle cell disease patients. The drive will take place on Saturday, Oct. 19, 2024, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hubble Studio, and seeks to engage the Black community and allies in supporting this meaningful cause.

Addressing Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease affects over 100,000 people in the United States, most of whom are of African descent. A single sickle cell patient can require as many as 100 blood transfusions in a year. Many of those patients are three-times more likely to receive a compatible blood match from someone who is Black. This blood drive aims to increase awareness and encourage blood donations from the Black community to help sickle cell patients live healthier lives.

Attendees who donate blood will not only make a life-saving impact but will also receive exclusive perks as a thank you. Each donor will receive a limited-edition piece of Supervsn merchandise, savor complimentary bites curated by Family Style and enjoy live DJ sets from Donovan’s Yard. Hubble Studio, serving as the host venue, adds a creative atmosphere to this vibrant community event.

This blood drive represents a partnership between the Red Cross,  Creative Noize, and an inspiring group of contributors who are committed to making a difference. With Hubble Studio providing the ideal venue, and support from Supervsn, Family Style, and Donovan’s Yard, this event is a testament to the power of community in tackling healthcare disparities while celebrating our culture.

Spaces for blood donations are limited, so make an appointment at rcblood.org/supervsn to secure a spot. Walk-in appointments are welcome and may be limited on the day of the drive.

How to donate blood

All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.

Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass^® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive.
