LOS ANGELES, March 28, 2023 — The American Red Cross Greater Long Beach and South Bay Chapter, the City of Lynwood and the City of South Gate are rescheduling the March 30, 2024, Sound the Alarm event to a later date this spring. Due to forecasted inclement weather and risk of flooding, for the safety of volunteers, community members and residents the event will be moved to a future date.
This spring, the Red Cross will be offering free smoke alarm installations for residents in need during a Sound the Alarm home fire safety event. Volunteers will also share information on the causes of home fires, how to prevent them, what to do if a fire starts and how to create an escape plan.
“A working smoke alarm can be the difference between survival and tragedy when a home fire strikes,” said Amy Papageorges, executive director of the American Red Cross Greater Long Beach and South Bay Chapter. “That’s why the Red Cross is rallying volunteers, teaming up with local partners and community members to provide these lifesaving devices to community residents.”
Residents who need assistance can register at redcross.org/LAhomefire for a 20-minute home fire safety visit.
PART OF NATIONAL CAMPAIGN Local Sound the Alarm events like this one in Lynwood and South Gate are a critical part of the national Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which has helped save at least 2,030 lives since launching in October 2014. Locally during this time, the Red Cross in Los Angeles and local partners have installed more than 58,750 free smoke alarms and made more than 19,500 households safer in Los Angeles County.
This work is made possible thanks to generous financial donations from regional partners: Edison International, Harbor Freight Tools Foundation, SoCalGas Company, California Resources Corporation and L.A. Care Health Plan.
