A Smoke Alarm Saved Lives in Miami Gardens
During a Sound the Alarm event on February 21, 2025, volunteers from the Greater Miami & the Keys Chapter of the American Red Cross partnered with members of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to install free smoke alarms in a Miami Gardens neighborhood.
One of those homes belonged to a family of four.
Members from the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Community Affairs Division installed a smoke alarm, tested it and spoke with the family about home fire safety and creating an escape plan. At the time, it was one of many homes visited that day and one of many routine conversations about preparedness.
But just three weeks later, that routine visit would make all the difference.
In March 2025, a fire broke out inside that same Miami Gardens home. When smoke began to fill the house, the alarm installed during the previous month alerted the family and allowed them to escape safely without injury.
On Saturday, February 7, 2026, the Greater Miami & the Keys Chapter proudly presented Hero Awards for Extraordinary Action to the members of the Community Affairs Division of Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, including the two individuals who installed the smoke alarms, to recognize the critical role they played in protecting this family.
“Smoke alarms are very important. It’s something people often take for granted, but the importance of smoke alarms is that they sound an alarm, allowing you to get out quickly and save yourself. Material things can be replaced. You cannot replace a life, and smoke alarms have been shown to save lives,” said Chief Faye Davis, who oversees the Community Affairs Division of Miami-Dade Fire.
Sound the Alarm events are part of the American Red Cross Home Fire Campaign, which works to reduce fire-related deaths and injuries by installing free smoke alarms in high-risk communities and educating families about home fire safety. Home fires remain the nation’s most frequent disaster, and in South Florida, the Red Cross responds to local fires nearly every day.
What happened in Miami Gardens shows that preparedness saves lives.
Ania Gonzalez, Fire & Life Safety Training Rep with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, said, “We are very proud to have assisted our community and to know that we saved a family that could have been hurt, injured, or died because they didn’t have working smoke alarms.”
For the family, the sound of that alarm meant time: time to get out. For the team that installed it, it reaffirmed why prevention work matters.
“It’s been great to partner with the American Red Cross to help install smoke alarms because they do save lives. People open their doors to let us in and allow us to educate them on home fire safety so they know their exit routes and where to meet if an emergency happens,” shared Antonio Allen, Fire and Life Safety Training Rep with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
Moments like this highlight the strength of collaboration between the Red Cross and local first responders. Together, they are not only responding to emergencies but working proactively to prevent tragedy before it strikes.
