After evacuating prior to Hurricane Helene, and then Hurricane Milton just fifteen days later, and with the memory of leaving her home for Hurricane Ian in 2022 still on her mind, 94-year-old Elaine Devroy remains upbeat and grateful. Holding her tiny dog, Anastasia, she talked about the kindness and care she received from the American Red Cross at the Punta Gorda shelter.
“People have been good to me here,” she said, as Red Cross volunteer Siranaj Hindawi took Anastasia’s leash for a walk around the shelter property. Siranaj and others have built a special bond with Elaine, who shares her life stories and experiences with the people who help to care for her in the shelter in Punta Gorda.
This shelter was set up for Hurricane Milton evacuees and led by Charlotte County and co-administered by a Red Cross team.
Elaine talks about her youth and speaks of fond Red Cross memories. “When I was 15 years old, the Red Cross trained me in how to assist women in birthing,” Elaine recalls. She said that training gave her a start in life until she got married and started to care for her seven children.
This Charlotte County shelter was set up to care for those like Elaine with special needs. Nursing teams were onsite to help residents with health services, medications, bathing assistance and other needs. Elaine is grateful for the care and says that she was able to maintain her dialysis appointments and other health needs while staying in the shelter.
Anastasia is also enjoying the treats and cuddles.
