It is through community partners that the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross is brought to life every day. One of those partners is AME Mt. Zion Church in Oakland Park, part of the broader AME Church network, whose commitment to service is making a lifesaving difference across Broward County and beyond.
Recently, we had the honor of providing Hands-Only CPR and First Aid training to members of AME Mt. Zion Church. Congregants gathered in the church to gain the skills and confidence to save a life when it matters most. From learning how to perform hands-only CPR to practicing how to respond in an emergency, participants walked away better prepared to be the “next one up” in case of an emergency.
“Next man or woman up” is a phrase that resonates deeply within this partnership. Reverend George Alen Hardy, who leads the men’s ministry and helps coordinate outreach efforts, shared the heart behind their commitment to preparedness: “Next man or woman up. We don’t know who’s next up and will need help and we need to all be able to support with lifesaving skills.”
Through a network of more than 450 churches across Florida and the Bahamas, the AME Church plays a vital role in disaster response and community support. During recent storms including Hurricanes Ian, Helene and Milton, their congregations helped load supplies, distributed relief items to affected families and supported communities both within and outside of South Florida.
As Rev. Hardy shared, “our partnering with you all is huge. We’ve been blessed to support all storms.” That partnership continues to grow in response and in preparedness. Churches and faith-based organizations are gearing up to support future disaster operations with access points and warehouse space, helping ensure that when a storm strikes, relief can move quickly to those who need it most.
The Hands-Only CPR and First Aid training at AME Mt. Zion Church is just one example of what this collaboration looks like in action. It reflects a shared belief that preparedness starts at the community level, whether it’s with churches, neighborhoods and families, where everyday people can become lifesavers.
During Red Cross Month, we celebrate partners like AME Mt. Zion Church who embody service, compassion and readiness. Together, we are building stronger, more resilient communities and ensuring that when the unexpected happens, someone nearby is trained, equipped and ready to step forward.
During our Red Cross Month celebration in March, we honor how people today deliver support when help can’t wait. Every act counts – whether it’s donating, volunteering or learning lifesaving skills. Get involved at redcross.org.
