Winter Storm Fern
Centerpoint Church, Cumberland County
Written by Amber Youngblood
The Red Cross works side by side with community partners every day to build stronger, more resilient communities, because when emergencies happen, it’s neighbors helping neighbors that makes the greatest difference.
We’re especially grateful for our partnership with Centerpoint Church in Cumberland County. In late October, the Red Cross South Central Chapter provided shelter training to nearly three dozen members of the congregation. Together, they later put that learning into action through a mock disaster exercise on January 17, placing the church on standby and practicing how volunteers would mobilize to open and operate a shelter should a disaster occur. Just one week later, Winter Storm Fern brought dangerously cold temperatures, impassable roads and widespread power outages across much of Kentucky. Because of their preparation and commitment, the church was ready. They quickly transformed their space into a safe shelter, setting up cots, blankets, toiletry supplies and serving warm meals to families seeking refuge.
This is what readiness looks like. Training, partnership and compassion, put into action when it matters most. We are deeply thankful for Centerpoint Church and all of our partners who stand ready to serve. Their efforts, made possible through the generosity of donors who fund free trainings and response resources, help ensure we can respond quickly and care for communities in times of need.
