In a world often marked by uncertainty and despair, people like Don Carden stand out as beacons of hope and embody the spirit of selflessness and service. Don, a retired U.S. Air Force service member turned American Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteer, spends his time between Louisiana and Illinois, providing his unwavering commitment and expertise to both regions.
Don's journey with the American Red Cross began in 2008, following his retirement. Witnessing the devastation caused by flooding along the Mississippi River, he felt compelled to act.
“I saw the Red Cross as an opportunity to help my community,” said Don. “I contacted the Moline, Illinois office and volunteered. I helped with the distribution of food, cleaning supplies, and aided in damage assessments.”
As his involvement with the Red Cross deepened, so did his desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
In 2013, Don embraced the lifestyle of a "snowbird," spending his winters in Louisiana and his summers in Illinois. It was during this time that he discovered his passion for disaster response and fire safety initiatives with the Red Cross. Whether it's installing smoke alarms or responding to Disaster Action Team (DAT) calls, Don's commitment to helping those in need knows no bounds.
Don's impact is felt far and wide, particularly through his involvement in the Sound the Alarm initiative. Armed with determination and compassion, he has installed hundreds of smoke alarms in homes across his communities. "The majority of homes do not have alarms installed, and if they do, most don’t work," Don explains. "Installing smoke alarms gives me the opportunity to potentially save lives."
But Don's contributions extend beyond the installation of smoke alarms. As a DAT volunteer, he responds to multiple home fire calls each week, offering aid and comfort to individuals facing some of the darkest moments of their lives.
"DAT work is the most rewarding and, at times, heartbreaking position," Don reflects. "It’s an opportunity to give aid to people who have survived the worst days of their lives due to fires, wind damage, or flooding."
Despite his humble nature, Don's contributions have left an indelible mark on his communities. Although he shies away from the spotlight, his actions speak volumes about his character and his unwavering commitment to the Red Cross' mission of compassion and service.
As Don continues his journey with the Red Cross, he remains a shining example of what it means to be a true humanitarian. His selfless acts of kindness are a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there are people like Don Carden who use their compassion and generosity to light the way forward.
Most of the 65,000 emergencies that the Red Cross responds to each year are local, personal disasters like home fires. They may not make the news, but we know they are just as devastating to the families affected. Trained and available, Disaster Action Team volunteers are ready to respond to these emergencies, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
