The American Red Cross Metro New York Chapter gathered in May to celebrate a remarkable group of volunteers whose dedication, compassion, and service help strengthen the United States Military Academy at West Point community every day. The annual West Point Volunteer Recognition and Awards Ceremony honored individuals and organizations whose contributions embody the very best of the Red Cross mission.
Throughout the year, Red Cross volunteers at West Point support blood drives, community outreach events, resiliency workshops, emergency preparedness exercises, and programs that benefit cadets, military families, faculty, and staff.
During the ceremony, several prestigious awards recognized volunteers for their exceptional service.
The Harriet Demarest Congeniality Award was presented to Jean Gottlieb for her extraordinary kindness, positivity, and commitment to serving others. A familiar and welcoming presence at Keller Army Community Hospital, Gottlieb also lends her expertise as a former quality and safety professional from Weill Cornell Medical Center. In addition, she supports every blood drive, drawing on her nursing background to ensure donor well-being. Her warmth, professionalism, and unwavering commitment have made her a treasured member of the Red Cross and Keller Hospital communities.
The Betty Rasmussen Service Above Self Award was awarded to Machele Smith, whose dedication exemplifies selfless service. Smith volunteers with Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause, bringing comfort and encouragement to children through therapy dog programs alongside her dog, Oreo. While balancing family responsibilities and preparing to welcome her third child, she also serves as a key organizational leader, managing schedules and supporting new volunteers. Her compassion, reliability, and quiet leadership have helped strengthen both her organization and the West Point community.
The Jean MacArthur Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to the Civil Air Patrol, New York Wing, in recognition of its outstanding partnership with the Red Cross. For the past two years, cadets and volunteers from the organization have played a critical role in supporting West Point blood drives. From escorting donors and assisting in refreshment areas to helping distribute incentives, their enthusiasm and willingness to serve have contributed significantly to the success of lifesaving blood collection efforts. Their partnership reflects a shared commitment to service and community support.
The ceremony also celebrated a significant milestone for Judi Audevard, who received the Service to the Armed Forces and International Services Achievement Award for contributing more than 4,000 volunteer hours to the Red Cross mission. As founder of Hudson Valley Paws for a Cause, Audevard has helped build a valued pet therapy program that brings comfort and companionship to patients and staff at Keller Army Community Hospital. Her years of service have created a lasting impact on countless lives.
Ted Berenblum, vice chair of the Metro New York North Chapter Board, also led a special presentation recognizing Col. Sean Hipp, Commander of Keller Army Community Hospital, for his steadfast support of the Red Cross during his tenure at West Point. Red Cross leaders expressed gratitude for his partnership and leadership in advancing programs that serve military members and their families.
As attendees reflected on the year's accomplishments, one message was clear: the strength of the Red Cross at West Point comes from the extraordinary volunteers who give their time, talent, and heart to others. Their commitment ensures that the Red Cross remains a trusted partner to the military community and a powerful force for good. Through every blood drive, therapy dog visit, community event, and act of kindness, these volunteers continue to embody the spirit of service that defines both the American Red Cross and West Point.
