20th Anniversary
USU v. Weber State Blood Battle
Nearly 20,000 units of blood collected in this legacy drive

The 20th Annual Blood Battle between USU and Weber State was a big success and we are pleased to announce the results: both schools donated a total of 553 units of life-saving blood. The American Red Cross of Utah stands in awe of the students and community members who took the time to contribute, and we know these donations will save lives and provide quality of life care to people who need it most.
There are no losers in a competition this generous, but one school did take the winning total:
USU students and community members donated 316 units of blood, Weber State students and community members donated 237 units.
In 20 years of this annual drive competition, the two schools have donated nearly 20,000 units total. “We are constantly inspired by these students and grateful to them for such a long tradition of service through blood donation,” said Michael Smauldon, Executive Director of the American Red Cross Northern Utah and Southwest Wyoming Chapter. “20 years of friendly competition has saved countless lives and we hope the students will feel their impact and continue this legacy of blood donation long past their graduations.”
USU’s leg of the drive was held on-campus, Tuesday Sept. 5 through Friday Sept. 8. The student club or organization that sent the most members to donate won Aggie Ice Cream and Chick-fil-a meals for their group.
USU President Elizabeth Cantwell said, “This is a critical time of year for blood donations to help replenish the supply both locally and nationwide. We are so proud of the Aggies who show up to make this drive a success every year – and even more importantly, to make a big impact in this lifesaving effort.”
Weber State’s drive was held the following week, beginning Monday Sept. 11 and ending Friday Sept. 15. Weber State President Brad Mortensen said “Our students have shown time and time again that they are eager to roll up a sleeve to help our community. 20 years of blood donation is a tradition we hope to carry on for many, many years to come.”
